PEMF (pulsed electro-magnetic field) bone growth stimulation is a safe, non-surgical treatment option for long bone and small bone non-unions. Using electricity, the bone growth stimulator generates a low level magnetic signal at the fracture site. This signal stimulates the body's normal bone healing process which may be impaired or absent. The device may be worn over a cast, external fixator, orthopedic brace, or clothing without losing it's effectiveness.
Electrical stimulation is an alternative to surgery and bone grafting for non-unions. A bone growth stimulator can also be used as an adjunct to surgery to promote healing of a fracture or fusion site.
